Crib Climbing

Your little one just climbed out of their crib for the first time! This is a terrifying experience for most parents since the crib is supposed to be a safe, contained space for your child. If your little one is under age 3, try these tips before assuming you have to move them to a toddler bed for safety.  The reason for this is that if your little one is not yet 3, they will likely have a hard time with understanding boundaries and staying in their bed and the transition to a bed may not be the best option. Here are THREE easy tricks to try.

  1.  Is your little one wearing a sleep sack? It’s much harder to climb over a crib rail when wearing a sleep sack. If your little Houdini is getting out of their sleep sack before climbing, try putting it on inside out and backwards.

  2. If your crib has a higher rail on the back side, turn the crib around so that the lower side is touching the wall. They won’t be able to climb up that higher side that is now facing the bedroom.

  3. Lower the mattress to the floor. Depending on the crib you have, you should be able to remove the springs that hold the mattress up and have the mattress rest directly on the floor. Make sure there are no spaces between the mattress and the bottom of the crib after doing so. This makes all 4 sides of the crib higher in relation to the mattress.

See how the mattress rests directly on the floor now? You just want to make sure there are no spaces between the crib and the mattress and that makes this a safer option for your little climber!
